In the 5th grade we had a career day where you dressed up as what you wanted to be when you grew up. I dressed up as a teacher, complete with clipboard and glasses (yes, there are pictures to prove it). Did I really want to be a teacher? No, even then I knew that. The truth was I didn’t know what I wanted to be when I grew up and teacher seemed like the obvious choice. Honestly, at the time, I thought if you weren’t a housewife then surely the only other choice was to be a teacher. So teacher it was.
Then in the 9th grade we had to declare a “major” in my high school. That was the moment I decided I wanted to be an architect. I loved drawing and excelled in math, so being an architect appealed to my strengths. Somewhere along the way, I ended up getting my Masters in City Planning and here I am today (sort of) in the career that I decided on that fateful day before high school began. Is this the career for me? Not quite. As it turns out, you don’t have to be the person you decided you were going to be at the age of 15, even if you spent the last fifteen years of your life trying to become that person. Thank heavens for that.
